Taking profile pictures has always been slightly annoying for me because I can take ten photos and somehow dislike all of them. I decided to approach the problem differently and see whether an AI could help me understand what was changing between pictures - https://overchat.ai/image/rate-my-face. I chose one photo that I considered average and uploaded it to an online face analysis tool. The system produced a score out of ten and then separated the result into different facial characteristics. It considered things like symmetry, proportions, jaw definition, cheekbones, skin quality and the overall relationship between features. That was more useful to me than a basic attractiveness quiz because I could actually see what the assessment was based on. I then selected another photograph with a different angle and expression and ran it through this AI face rater. The score changed somewhat, which wasn't surprising after I thought about the differences between the two images. I also noticed that pictures taken from too close can make certain parts of the face look disproportionate. Since then, I've started paying more attention to the distance from the camera and the lighting when taking photos. I still don't think an algorithm can completely define someone's appearance, and I wouldn't take a numerical rating personally. For me, the value was in comparing photographs and seeing how small changes in the picture could affect the analysis.
